#11 On April 24, 1924, former Asst. State’s Attorney Wanda Stopa went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Y. Kenley Smith, with the intentions of shooting Mr. Smith, with whom she’d been having an affair. After finding that Mr. Smith was not home, Stopa shot at his wife Genevive but hit and killed the groundskeeper, Howard Manning, instead. Stopa fled to Detroit and committed suicide with arsenic in a hotel room. Stopa had been Chicago’s youngest woman attorney. Her family held her wake in their apartment at 1505 W. Augusta Street on April 18, 1924. She is buried at the Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago. — Handout
